Langkawi Mangrove Tour
Langkawi Geopark
Langkawi is the world's 52nd Geopark and the first in Southeast Asia and Malaysia, following its listing in the UNESCO Global Network of Geoparks on June 1 2007. It is unique in that it comprises all the 99 islands which make up the Langkawi Archipelago. The Langkawi Geopark encompasses 6 geological formations and 90 prominent geological sites out of the 438 sites identified in Malaysia. Langkawi, dubbed the birthplace of the fetus land of the region, has a vast geodiversity and a complex geological history. The islands have a geological, archaeological and ecological heritage that among others includes 400 million-year-old rock formation, mangrove forests and myriad rare and unique flora and fauna. The combination of various geological processes over eons and the prolonged weathering since is surfaced around 220 million years ago has resulted in the magnificent geological landscape and features of Langkawi today.
GEOFOREST PARK
The Machinchang Cambrian Geoforest Park
Machinchang Cambrian Geoforest Park hosts the oldest geological formation in Malaysia known as the machinchang formation. Important geosites include Teluk Datai (with the oldest grains of sand), Pantai Tengkorak (submerged old continent), Tanjung Buta/Pulau Jemuruk (graveyards of oldest life forms in the country) and Tanjung Sabung(where limestone succeeds sandstone). Other wonders created by recent geological processes include the Temurun and Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls, remnant islands of Anak Burau and Anak Datai and beautiful beaches in Teluk Datai and Pantai Kok. The Machinchang peak itself exhibits peculiarly chipped sandstone and the ridges are among the most beautiful landscapes in the island.
Kilim Karst Geoforest Park
The Kilim Geoforest Park features limestones dominating the eastern part of the main Langkawi island and adjacent small islands of the Setul formation. The landscapes are magnificent with near vertical to subrounded karstic hills and pinnacles of various shapes and sizes. Also in the area are the three river basins of Kilim, Air Hangat and Kisap and islands of Langgun and Tanjung Dendang.
Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park
The Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park which comprises the finest marbles also houses a number of caves. One of the most unique features of the Marble Geoforest Park is the Tasik Dayang Bunting (Lake of the Pregnant Maiden), the largest freshwater lake in which carries many legends. Also unique to the area is the Mangrove forest which flourishes along the Dayang Bunting Straits. It is also believed that the magical waters of the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden will grant the wishes of hopeful barren women. The name originated from the combination of landscapes from marble and granite bedrocks which form a figure resembling a pregnant maiden on her back.

Good reasons why to choose Langkawi for your holiday / honeymoon and much more
Langkawi Geopark is Malaysia's first geopark and is located in the far northwestern corner of peninsular Malaysia. Located in northern State of Kedah, it is unique in the sense that it was formed on 99 islands that together made up the legendary Langkawi Archipelago.
The total land area of Langkawi Geopark is about 478km2.
It is accessible by sea from Kuala Perlis , Kuala Kedah and Penang jetties or by air from Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Singapore and Bangkok.
Langkawi has been dubbed as the birthplace or the fetus land of the region. The various natural landscapes of Langkawi reflects the island's geodiversity and its complex geological history. It has the best-exposed and most complete Palaeozoic sedimentary sequence in Malaysia beginning from Cambrian to the Permian period. Later during the Mesozoic, the islands underwent a major tectonic event that resulted in the emplacement of its numerous granitic igneous bodies.
This incredible power generated by nature from the deep mantle beneath the earth has driven up huge blocks of older rocks and somehow placed them above a very much younger terrain.
In Langkawi geological history, much of its geological development was somewhat linked to what had happened in the old supercontinent Pangea and southern hemispheric Gondwanaland since more than 550 million years ago. It started in the deposition of Machinchang sandstone in a lacustrine environment during much of the Cambrian time, followed by the submergence of the land during Late Cambrian time (--500m.y.) which allowed the invasion of shallow marine fauna into the proto-Langkawi sea. The continuous subsidence of the sea floor resulted in the formation of thick limestone of Setul Formation during the Ordovician. At the end of Ordovician time (--440m.y.), the sea became too deep to eventually stop the limestone deposition temporarily.
Setul limestone continued to develop during Silurian until the Middle Devonian (-370m.y.), followed by the deposition of sandstone and mudstone which sometimes are related to the rafted ice due to the global melting of Gondwana ice cap.
The dropstone bearing black sandstone and mudstone of Singa Formation is succeeded by the limestone of Chuping Formation during the Early Permian (-280m.y.) before the sea was slowly brought up by a complicated tectonic process.
The Chuping limestone is believed to have stopped depositing before the end of Permian (-245m.y.) by this tectonic event that among others brought up a large block of earth crust in the eastern part of Langkawi overlapping the much younger block in the west. The tectonic event ended up with the emplacement of granite beneath the Langkawi crust at the end of Triassic (-220m.y.).
What we have in Langkawi today is a combined result of these various processes and the prolonged weathering process that took place ever since the Langkawi land was brought to the surface around 220 million years ago. As a result, we have a beautiful mountainous range of Machinchang sandstone at the northwestern corner of Langkawi Island, the conical Gunung Raya granite at the center and a rugged karst terrain of Setul Limestone in the eastern part of Langkawi.
In the southwest of Langkawi islands, the Singa formation dominated while the Chu ping Limestone dominates the western part of Dayang Bunting Island. Some of the landscapes are truly outstanding, particularly those of the Machinchang and the karstic limestone in the eastern part of Langkawi.

duty-free shopping
Langkawi is the premier duty-free shopping destination in Malaysia. Shops, bazaars and shopping centres throughout the island, especially those in the high-traffic areas such as Kuah, Oriental Village, Pantai Chenang and Pantai Tengah offer a good selection of clothing, cosmetics, shoes, handbags, household products and electronics. From the antique and the exotic to the latest in fashion, the constantly changing product range includes an extensive collection of designer labels from the fashion capitals of the world that have made their way to this paradise of an island.
The duty exemption on a range of items in Malaysia has resulted in competitive pricing and makes shopping in Langkawi an even more attractive option. Duty-free items like cameras, watches, pens, cosmetics, perfume, cigarettes, liquor and electronic goods are among the cheapest in the world. Local regulations ensure that items are price-tagged and prominently displayed, particularly at department stores where prices are fixed.
Shopping malls in Langkawi where everything is designed for shopper convenience have foreign currency exchange counters, restaurants, supermarkets and lots of shops offering tremendous variety. There are currently four shopping malls on the island -- Jetty Point Mall, Langkawi Fair Shopping Centre, Langkawi Parade and the much smaller one-tenant Zon Shopping Centre that adjoins the Underwater World at Pantai Cenang as well as at the Langkawi Wildlife Park at Jalan Air Hangat.
Duty-free shopping for wines, spirits and beers can also be made at most of the popular tourism centres, including Pantai Tengah, Telaga Harbour, Oriental Village, Pantai Cenang, Padang Mat Sirat (airport) an, of course, Kuah town. Check out the prices, as some may be more competitive than others despite the duty-free tag.
A good place to start your shopping spree is the modern Langkawi Fair Shopping Mall, consisting of 100 retail lots housed in a 2-storey building. Its anchor tenant, the Billion Department Store, stocks a wide selection of items such as perfumes and fragrances, cosmetics, leather wear, sports gear, ladies' accessories, confectionery, liquor and cigarettes The other shopping outlets to check out in Kuah is the Langkawi Duty Free (M) Sdn. Bhd, Haji Ismail Group and the Saga Shopping Centre. All the establishments offer almost similar range of duty-free products. The difference is probably in the pricing and staff friendliness.
Most of the outlets at the Kuah town shopping area stock loads of cheap luggage bags, kitchen and household items. This is due to the fact that such items are popular among Malaysian shoppers from the mainland.

GEOPARK
At 500 million years, the Machincang Mountain Range is the oldest rock formation in Malaysia and will soon officially be the first UNESCO GeoPark in South-East Asia. Located off the north-western coast of Peninsula, the Langkawi GeoPark is located on Langkawi Island the largest of a formation of 99 islands.
WHAT ARE GEOPARKS?
A "World GeoPark" is a designation granted to an area unique for its geological and.or geomorphological heritage in terms of scientific rarity, aesthetic appeal and educational value. The key functions of a GeoPark are to protect the geological heritage, promote geology to the public and to use geology and other aspects of its natural and cultural heritage to promote sustainable economic development (normally through tourism). Formed in 2000, the European GeoPark network established some 17 European GeoParks before they were integrated into a UNESCO-endorsed "World GeoPark" or "UNESCO GeoPark." There were 50 listed GeoParks in September 2006.
